Public
Transport
Taxis: Most towns and villages have a taxi service
which is relatively inexpensive for short trips. Most
taxi drivers speak a little English as they are used
to liaising with the Expat community.
Buses: An excellent way to get around town and around
Spain. Most villages have their own bus services covering
their own village and transport to towns immediately
adjacent to their area. Inter-city bus services are
provided by ALSA (www.alsa.es)
who have a vast transport network throughout Spain.
(For example, currently, five buses a day travel from
Almeria City along the coast, all the way to Valencia,
stopping in major towns and cities along the way.) Travel
via ALSA is inexpensive and fun with staged food/toilet
breaks and films en route. It is a great way to see
Spain.
Trains: Whilst bus services are often more accessible
as they cover smaller towns, if you live near a major
rail terminus or plan to travel long distances, rail
is a great option. Also, unlike the UK, the services
on offer if you travel First Class are excellent (waiter
service food and drink and not all that much more expensive!).
The Spanish rail network is one of the cheapest in Europe,
with excellent rolling stock. Special discounts operate
throughout the year and children under 12 to people
under 26 holding an International Student Card get discounted
travel. Other than guide dogs, pets are allowed in single-berth
sleeping compartments only. For further information
visit the website, www.renfe.es.
For travellers to the Costa Blanca, a coastal railway
runs between Alicante city and Denia, seven times daily.
This is quite a slow journey (if you are commuting)
however, it hugs the coastline and meanders through
the mountains and is an ideal way to view the natural
beauty of the area. This train is called the “tram”
and the website is www.fgv.es.
Planes: Spain is a vast country and another option is
to pick an internal flight (which can sometimes work
out cheaper than train or bus). Compare prices by logging
onto Spanish airline Iberia (www.iberia.es).
