Shipping
your belongings
There are many companies eager to ship your
belongings to Spain but the standard of service they
offer and the associated costs vary greatly so you
should obtain numerous quotes. Word of mouth is a good
way to find a good company. However, you should consider
costs carefully before deciding to ship large quantities
of furniture at all for the following reasons:
- If you buy a resale property, this normally
comes with all furniture and furnishings, as
shown upon inspection
- Electro-domestic goods are cheap and readily
available here in Spain
- There is a virulent woodworm in Spain that
can literally munch its way in a very short time
through all your furniture, doors and woodwork.
For some strange reason, they do not attack pine
furniture, hence the prevalence of pine in
furniture shops in Spain. If you are bringing
out the family antiques, be sure to properly
protect your items from attack and be very
careful of this when buying second-hand
furniture
- Furniture that suits your English home and English
climate may not necessarily suit the architecture or
ambience of your new Spanish residence.
Should you choose to bring your furniture with you,
customs clearance is no longer necessary between EU
countries so there should be no removal complications
and the process should only take a month or so. However,
be sure to insure your belongings whilst in storage/transit
(cost typically 1-2% of declared value of your goods).
