NIE/NIF Numbers

In order to work, buy property or open a bank account you will need to apply for a NIE/NIF number (equivalent to the British National Insurance number). Most people apply for this via their Abogado (Lawyer) or Gestoria (accountant/administrator) for a small fee, as organising official paperwork in Spain can be both time consuming and frustrating, or you can apply personally at any Police Station with a section for Foreign Issues (have a photocopy of your passport as well as the original with you). This should then be ready for collection within one to three months. If you immediately commence employment upon moving to Spain, your employer may assist you in this matter but it remains your personal responsibility to obtain a NIE/NIF number and this should be the first thing you do when moving to Spain.
