Land
Grab Laws (Ley Reguladora de la actividad urbanistica)
LRAU
There has been much adverse publicity in the local
and international press regarding Land Grab Laws. This
is a “loophole” in the system whereby a
Law designed to ensure proper infrastructure (i.e. roads,
lighting etc.) in rural areas was misinterpreted by
some property developers and some home owners found
themselves losing part of their property with minimal
compensation and, in some cases, liable to pay a proportion
of new infrastructure costs for developments alongside
their existing property. This Law affects land which
is classified as “rural” and as long as
you buy a property on land classified as “urban”
this should not be a problem. However, the situation
underlines the need for you to have proper legal advice
(i.e. engage an Abogado) at the time of purchasing a
property.
