Flora
and Fauna
Spain is home to some of the rarest species of wildlife
left in Europe including the Spanish Imperial Eagle
and the Liberian Lynx. Wolves still roam in some isolated
areas and brown bears and wild boar inhabit high mountain
locations. 70% of Europe’s migratory birds either
stop at or breed in Spain and the salt marshes of the
Costa Blanca and Costa Calida and the Cabo de Gata nature
reserve in Costa Almeria are a paradise for bird watchers.
The Moors (Muslims) left their mark on the landscape
with tiered terraces (a device to make maximum use of
rainfall) evident along the Costa coastline. Olive,
cherry and citrus groves dot the landscape. There is
a rich tapestry of plant life, from exotic orchids growing
wild in the Costa Blanca to sunflowers and poppies in
the Sierra Nevada mountains of Andalucia. Spain is a
huge country, full of contrast and colour.
