Cars in Spain
Bringing your car to Spain: If you wish to bring your
British car with you when moving to Spain, you are free
to do so, provided that you have owned it for at least
six months in the UK. Please note, however, that you
cannot rent, transfer or sell your vehicle within 12
months of arrival. Your British Registration documents
will have to be surrendered to the DVLA who will give
you a Certificate of Permanent Export. You can download
an application form from the official website www.dvla.gov.uk.
Buying a new car is as easy as buying one in the UK.
You will need a NIE/NIF number and proof of residence.
Buying a second-hand car is a little more complicated.
You must make sure you obtain the following documentation
upon buying: Test Certificate and technical sheet; Road
Tax receipt; Registration document and a receipt for
the payment of transfer tax. Unlike the UK, debts can
accrue on assets in Spain rather than on individuals
i.e. debts can accumulate on cars. It is therefore important
that, prior to purchase, you have an official historical
check done on the vehicle to ensure there are no outstanding
debts – your gestoria can organise this.
