Performing Arts
Flamenco is truly considered Spanish art, and its strongest roots lie in the South. There are three forms: Cante, the song, Baile, the dance, and Guitarra, guitar playing. Gypsies played the major role in the creation of Flamenco but there is no doubt that the strong Moorish influence of Southern Spain was a major contributor. Media attention has brought Flamenco to the international stage but it will always retain its intimate appeal. Many International Dance Troupes now tour Spain and the World, however, the best way to appreciate Flamenco is still via an impromptu performance by local Spaniards. There are classes available along the Coast but in Costa Almeria, in particular, you will find yourself at the heart of Flamenco with weekly performances on offer in hotels, restaurants, cultural centres and bars.
There are other forms of dance school, offering everything from ballet to belly dancing located in most major villages and towns along the coast.
You will find many English amateur theatrical groups dotted along the coast, the best way to find out what is happening in your area is to buy one of the local weekly English newspapers (such as the Costa Blanca News) which is packed with information of use to the Expat Community.
