America’s Cup
The 32nd America’s Cup (Valencia, 2007) will be the first ever held in Europe over the event’s 152 year history. The triumph in March 2003 of a Swiss boat brought with it the possibility of a European venue and Valencia was chosen as Host City due to its central location and reliable breezy weather.
This means that one of the most prestigious events on the yachting calendar will be readily accessible to millions of Europeans and numerous preparatory Regattas are already taking place in the region. New transport and port infrastructure
is also underway to cope with the expected influx of visitors.
The city of Valencia is the 3rd largest city in Spain (after Madrid and Barcelona) and was founded by the Romans in 137BC and it was Valencian bankers who loaned monies to Queen Isabella to fund the Columbus expedition in 1492. It is a vibrant and bustling city with an historic centre, including a 13th Century Cathedral, a baroque palace (its façade hand carved in alabaster) and many markets, art galleries (containing works by Velazquez, El Greco and Goya) and museums so there are
plenty other attractions to occupy you as well. For more details on the America’s Cup programme of events, visit the official website on www.americascup.com.
